3,670 URL hypertext links to 406 railroads in Asia (less Japan); and to

For those whose only interest is ports, consider the fact that railroads
are an important part of any port complex and as such are an extension of
the ports facilitating distribution to/from inland destinations. In this
age of so-called “green logistics,” they offer a cleaner and more fuel
efficient alternative than air or highway movement. CSX Railroad estimates
that they can move a ton of freight 426 miles on a gallon of fuel. When I
was an over-the-road truck driver, my big rig at 80,000# (gross vehicle
weight) was able to go 5-7 miles on a gallon of fuel. Railroads may not be
as cheap as a ship or barge on a ton-mile basis, but they can be much
faster.
